Decorating Disney at College

The top of my bookshelf.
College isn't always the easiest place to be a Disney fan.  Most of your peers don't understand why you'd rather go to Walt Disney World than Cancun over spring break, and they don't understand why you can't hang out on Sunday evenings because you want to listen to a live podcast.  That said, decorating Disney at college is all about subtlety; no Cinderella comforters or life sized Mickey dolls required.  (But more power to you if you do want those things in your room!)

For me, the majority of my Disney stuff is on top of my bookshelf, as seen in the picture above.  I have my Minnie ears, my Disney picture frame (featuring James and I with Belle), my two Vinylmation figures, and the lucky owls I got from Mitsukoshi in the Japan pavilion.  (The turtle is from Jamaica and not related to Disney, but it's still cute!)  This version of decorating Disney is understated and subtle, though any other fan would certainly spot me out as a fellow Disney lover.

On the other hand, the next time I go back to my house (I live in an on campus apartment during school, but I still live at home when school's not in session), I plan on bringing my park maps back to school with me.  I want to put them up on the wall with my other posters, as an homage to the most magical place on earth.  That form of decorating Disney is a bit more obvious, but there's nothing wrong with that.

In the kitchen, you can decorate Disney with various cookware, silverware, and plates with Mickeys on them, and in the bathroom, you can get Disney-themed towels.  There are also all sorts of collectible figures that you can put anywhere in your home to make the room a little more festive or magical.  With so many ways to decorate Disney, the only real factors are how subtle you want to be and how much money you're willing to spend!

How do you decorate Disney, whether you're a college student or not?  Do you prefer understated or more obvious decor?  Do you not decorate Disney at all, even if you're a big fan?  Let me know in a comment, a tweet (@discollegeblog), or on Facebook!

  1. We have Disney stuff everywhere! Of course, with three kids, it is easy to see why there is so much Disney. First my daughters have a Disney princess room - can you say pink and princesses everywhere?!?! My son's room is top to bottom Lightning McQueen and other characters from Cars. Everywhere else in the house there is a little Disney magic. Every trip we buy one frame for our favorite Disney photo from that trip. Those are all over the house. We have Disney kitchen and bath things. Then, at Christmas our regular Christmas tree is a 10 foot tree, but in our second living room, we have a 7 foot Disney tree. It is coated with Disney ornaments I have collected since I was very little and the one ornament we purchase each trip to WDW.

By the way, when I was in college, I had a subtle display in my room too. As you mentioned, people who are Disney fans noticed. I too always went to Disney rather than Cancun or any other place and was questioned constantly about it!

  3. It is really funny because the kids love their rooms and I have a Cricut machine, which of course, I have all the Disney cartridges, so they helped make all the princesses and Cars characters in their rooms. This gives them a little more ownership over it since they participated. But having the pictures frames all around, they constantly talk about our trips to Disney and ask when we are going back! I think I may be lucky enough to be raising three Disney fanatics! :-)

  4. I was a lot more subtle when I was in residence and when I was living with roomates... but now I live with my boyfriend and my sister is also living with us just for the semester (she graduates after this) and so I've gotten a bit more obvious. I collect Jim Shore Disney figurines so they're in the living room, and ALL my mugs are from Disney, and I have my ears hanging on my bedroom wall, etc. I would for sure have a full Disney kitchen if I could afford it, but every trip I get something new hehe. Actually, my boyfriend who is NOT a Disney nut looooves going through the Art of Disney with me and picking out his favorite paintings (to my delight!) so I'm sure we'll have some Disney art on the walls in the near future!

Oh, and in rez the girl next to me had an entire Barbie room... hot pink barbie rugs, barbie posters, barbie lamps, shelves full of barbies. And let me tell you, it was a SMALL room to have that much hot pink crammed in! So... having a full-out Disney room wouldn't have been so bad in comparison! haha

  5. Beth, I hope to raise Disney fanatic children one day!

Angela, that's awesome. I would own every piece of Disney merchandise if I could afford it lol.

  6. When I was in college, I had a collection of shot glasses from WDW on display. It's really the only thing a self-respecting college guy can hawk openly. I kept my real collection back at home.

  7. Lol! James has his (four!) Vinylmations at his house too, so I guess it's a guy thing.
